I'm a Hindu! uummmm what?

OK so India, the birthplace of Buddhism has declared that it's only a part of Hinduism. Wow.... I'm really not sure how to put this nicely.... but they are VERY different...

Isn't this a bit like calling Christianity a sect of Judaism? Buddhism grew out of Hindusism just as Christianity grew out of Judaism, but that doesn't make either outgrowth a sect of its progenitor.
